The Valley Arts District

I was in a group show in May. It was at an old industrial core of the Valley neighborhood on the Orange/West Orange border in New Jersey.

I am working on a ptintmaking project. I printed hundreds of a single dandelion seed on paper. And I asked people witing their thoughts about dandelion and where they come from. Eventually, I would like to make a book of it.

Participating an event of Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, Shani and I showed our works again. It was raining. So after the show at the park, we discarded the works.

가정상담소 후원 전시회 연다…설치작가 김승애씨, 4월 16~17일 할렘서[뉴욕 중앙일보] 기사입력: 03.30.09 21:25

설치작가 김승애씨가 뉴욕가정상담소를 후원하는 전시회를 개최한다.

김씨는 4월 16~17일 할렘(1206 아담 클레이톤 포웰블러바드)에서 열리는 전시회 ‘경계없는 영토’에 흑인 샤니 피터스와 함께 한국인과 흑인, 또 여성으로 각자 다른 문화적 배경이 둘의 관계에 어떻게 하나로 연결되는지 확인하는 설치작을 준비하고 있다. 설치작은 종이와 포장지, 테이프, 문화적 배경을 나타내는 문양들로 구성된다.

김씨는 이날 전시작 일부를 판화로 만들어 판매할 예정이다. 판화에는 한글로 ‘환영’ ‘상호관계’ 등의 단어가 삽입된다. 그는 판매 수익금 일부를 뉴욕가정상담소에 기부할 예정이다.

2002년부터 자원봉사자로 뉴욕가정상담소와 인연을 맺은 김씨는 가정폭력 피해자가 24시간 전화로 도움을 요청할 수 있는 ‘핫라인’ 상담을 거쳐 호돌이 방과후학교에서 미술 치료 교사로 일했다.

그는 “밤에 폭력 남편을 피해서 나와 자신의 목숨이 위태로운 상황에서도 남편을 걱정하는 피해자의 전화가 기억난다”면서 “가정폭력 피해자의 상황이 심각해 도움의 손길이 많이 필요하다”고 말했다.

미술 치료 교사로 일할 때는 폭력 가정의 자녀를 가르쳤다. 김씨는 “가정 문제로 인해 정신적인 피해를 받은 아이들이 미술을 통해 마음을 털어놓는 것을 보고 보람을 느꼈다”고 덧붙였다.

김씨와 공동으로 전시회에 참여하는 샤니 피터스는 미시간주립대학을 졸업하고, 뉴욕시립대에서 미술 석사학위를 받았다. 비디오와 설치작 등의 활동을 통해 커뮤니티와 소통하는 데 주력하고 있다.

전시회 수익금은 피터스가 일하는 할렘 텍스타일 웍스에도 기부된다.

PS 122 Gallery

PS122 Gallery's Annual benefit show starts on Saturday December 5th (5-7pm) and will remain on view until December 21st. All the artworks in the show can be purchased for $122--the proceeds going to the non-profit PS122 Gallery. I went last year and had a lot of fun--but sure to show up early, otherwise you'll find many of the works are already spoken for. After the opening on the 5th, the gallery hours are Thursday - Sunday, 12-6pm.
